Data Volume Wiping

When an AWS Elastic Block Storage (EBS) volume is deleted, AWS automatically wipes its contents using an unspecified method.

Upon request, Healthcare Blocks can perform a wiping operation consistent with NIST 800-88 standards prior to deleting it. HIPAA does not require this additional step but certain security compliance frameworks such as HITRUST may recommend it for storage mediums containing sensitive data.

Since the duration of an NIST 800-88 compliant data wipe can be lengthy, Healthcare Blocks uses an automated solution that involves provisioning temporary virtual machines. Therefore, there will be an additional cost on your monthly statement if this wiping method is utilized. Please contact us if you have any questions.
